  7.     She's been singing since fourth grade on New York's Long
  8. Island, so Taylor Dayne, 27, has paid her dues. Along the way
  9. were a variety of club stints, including a gig belting Russian
  10. folk songs ("That paid the rent"). Taking success in stride, she
  11. had no "second-album jitters" with Can't Fight Fate, the current
  12. follow-up to her hot 1987 LP. New songs need a new great Dayne
  13. look, so she's dropped the old "image of a vixen with massive
  14. hair." Upkeep is easier. Says she: "There's not so much
  15. backbreaking curling-iron work."
